ALSTRACT An ammonia hazard analysis was performed for the control room at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant.

This was done to determine if a rupture in the large onsite ammonia storage tank would compromise the control room habitability.

The amount of ammonia gas escaping from solution was determined using assumptions in Reg.

Guide 1.95 (25% of NH escapes by flashing and boiloff initially), and an equation which calculatesmasstransferbyevaporation. After spillage and flashing, 1/2 of the water-tmmonia solution is assumed drained by the turbine building floor drains.

After determining the amount of ammonia released, three case studies were performed fol-lowing guidelines in Reg. Guide 1.78 which says that the chemical's effect on the control room should be evaluated during all operating modes.

The cases are:

Case I - Tank ruptures during normal operation Case II - Tank ruptures during loss of offsite power or LOCA Case III - Tank ruptures during a seismic event In case I the maximum outside concentration lasts 10 minutes. It would take over one hour to reach a detectable level in the control room at that concentration. This is assuming the control room sees a continuous release and not a puff release. In case 11 it takes over two hours to reach the threehold limit in the control room. In this case the ammonia gss is assumed contained by the turbine building because no outside air is bsing brought in but 3200 CFM of clean outside air is being brought in the control building and is sufficient to reduce concentrations in the control room. In case III the maximum control room concentration would peak at 15 pra which is below the threshold limit set in Reg. Guide 1.70 of 50 ppm. The concentration will decrease with time from dilution with outside air.

The results show control room habitability is not compromised by spillage from the large cmmonia storage tank.
