301/492-7771 PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR JUNE 2 ON APPLICATIONS TO EXPORT NUCLEAR FUEL TO INDIA l
A legislative-type public hearing before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on two applications from Edlow Inter-national Company to export nuclear reactor fuel material to India will be held June 2, and if necessary, June 3, in Room 1115 at the Commission's offices, 1717 H Street, N.W.,
Washington, D.C.
The hearing will begin at 10 a.m.
Edlow International is agent for the Government of India, owner of the Tarapur Atomic Power Station near Bombay where the low enriched uranium fuel material would oe used.
On May 7, the Commission announced it would hold a public legislative-type hearing to consider the applica-tions.
(Public Announcement No.76-109 dated May 7.)
Details on the scope and purpose of the hearing are con-tained in a Notice of Hearing published in the Federal f
Register on May 17.
The notice states that "The hearing will focus primarily on issues which pertain to the adequacy of the safeguards and related assurances appli-cable to fuel to be exported to the Tarapur Station and any special nuclear material produced therefrom."
Participants in the hearing are three organizations which petitioned the Commission (Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sierra Club, the Union of Concerned Scien-tists), the Department of State and the NRC staff.
On May 14 a motion was received from the petitioners to post-pone the hearing until July 8 or thereafter.
Responses to this motion have yet to be filed; hence no action has been taken.
