SUMMARY

I contacted the following individuals on the dates indicated to obtain additional information on the memorandum that they prepared dated September 17,1962, which was addressed to Mr. George Chapman and Dr. Spink of the Carborundum Metal Company.

Specifically, I was searching for additional information with regard to Paragraph H of their memorandum and the accompanying Table 7.

Dr. J. W. Baum is currently with the Brookhaven National Laboratory (FTS:666-4214).

I contacted him on 8/1/79. He stated that his was a limited visit to the Parkersburg facility and he did not recall much of what transpired. He said he would check his notes and call me back. He also said that Whipple had a continuing contract with Carborundum and would send different people to the site as necessary. Baum called me back at 14:00 hours on 8/3/79. He said that the trip had been a two-day visit and he was acting in the position of consultant (Assistant to Whipple) and that his notea reflected very little additional information. He had no direct knowledge of any burial of radioactive material on the site nor does he remember any discussion beyond that in the memorandum.

I contact Mr. Whipple who is still with the University of Michigan (FTS: 313-764-3188).

Whipple stated that he acted as a consultant to Carborundum from about March 1960 through January 1963. Whipple looked through his files and could find no additional information except for a subsequent .emo dated November 1, 1962, which discussed thorium and uranium wastes. Whipple said that he would send me a copy of that memorandur .

Whipple did not recall any conversations regarding burial of radioactive material on sitt beyond that presented in the memorandum and had no direct knowledge of any burials being made.

I contacted Dr. D. E. Barber who is now with the University of Minnesota (FTS: 786-8080) .

Barber stated that he worked as a consultant (Assistant to Whipple) involved with the Carbop ndum (Parkersburg facility) between 1961-1963. Barber stated that he had no additional information beyond the memorandum, that he did not recall any conversation regarding burial of radioactive materials on site and he had no dircet knowledge of any such burials.
