SEP 061985 Georgia Department of Natural Resources ATTN:

Mr. J. Leonard Ledbetter, Director d'

Environmental Protection Division i

270 Washington St., SW Atlanta, GA 30334

Dear Mr. Ledbetter:

SUBJECT:

STATE OF GEORGIA ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING APPRAISAL A routine appraisal of performance under the NRC/ State of Georgia Environmental Monitoring Contract was conducted on August 14, 1985.

A copy of the NRC appraisal 1, enclosed.

The appraisal included an in-depth assessment of activities performed and-the annual reports submitted by the State pursuant to the 1983 and 1984 contracts A

preliminary review of the State's performance under the 1985 contract was also included. Results of the appraisal were discussed with members of your staff by Mr. P. Stoddart and Ms. S. Adamovitz during a visit to your laboratory on August 14, 1985.

The appraisal showed that the State met all obligations in the 1983 and 1984 contracts with the minor exception of certain milk and sediment sample collections for Plant Vogtle which were obtained and reported as duplicate samples instead of split samples as specified. State personnel agreed to review sample collection procedures to assure that split samples will be obtained in the future.

No j

other discrepancies were identified, and overall performance by the State of Georgia under the provisions of these cor, tracts has been good.

Based on the good performance indicated above and the excellent cooperation we have received from you and your staff, we intend to renew this Contract. As discussed with your staff, a new Environmental Radiation Contract for CY 1986-1988 is being developed and will be submitted for your approval later j

this year.

V We appreciate your interest and participation in the NRC Environmental Monitoring Contract Program and look forward to your continued cooperation.

e Sincerely, h

J Philip Stohr, Director Division of Radiation Safety and Safeguards J
