Gentlemen:

This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs. B. H. Little

and C. H. Brown of this office from July 31 through August 31, 1988 of

activities at Callaway Plant, Unit 1, authorized by NRC Operating License

NPF-30, and to the discussion of our findings with Mr. J. D. Blosser and

others of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during

the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective

examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and

interviews with personnel.

During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in violation

of NRC requirements, as specified in the enclosed Notice. A written response

is required.

! Certain areas examined during this inspection concern a suDject matter which

is exempt from disclosure according to Part 73, Title 10, Code of Federal

l Regulations.Section73.21(c)(2). This information must t'e handled and

! protectad in accordance with the provisions of 10 CFR /3 4'1. Consequently,

the enclosure to this letter, and your response to the violation identified

in the enclosure to this letter will not be place 3 in the NRC Fublic Docurrent

Room. Therefore, your statement of correctivr. action regarding the violation

identified in the enclosure should be submitted as a separate enclosure to

your transmittal letter in the mar.nor prescribed.
