Dear Ms. Brinson:

The Department of Energy has forwarded your letter of July 3,1986, to us for response. We appreciate your interest and the opportunity to respond to your question regarding the startup of Vogtle.

As you may know, the Vogtle units are pressurized water reactors each rated to provide approximately 1150 MWe, The fuel load of Unit 1 is presently estimated for December 15, 1986. Following pre-operational testing the unit would be ready for commercial operation about 6 months after loading fuel. The fuel load of the second Vogtle unit is scheduled for March 1988.

If you are interested in more specific information regarding Vogtle, you may wish to visit the Local Public Document Room (LPDR) for Vogtle at the Burke County Public Library on Fourth Street in Waynesboro, Georgia. The LPDR for Vogtle contains the Final Safety Analysis Report prepared by Georgia Power Company, the staff's evaluation of Vogtle environmental and safety issues discussed in the Final Environmental Statement and the Safety Evaluation Report, respectively, and all otner correspondence related to the licensing of the Vogtle units.
