PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF' SAFEGUARDS EVENT PNS-II-80-32 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance. The information presented

-is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all J that is known by IE staff as of this date.

FACILITY: Carolina Power and Light Company Brunswick 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-325 and 50-324 Southport, North ' Carolina

SUBJECT:

B0MB THREAT On November 28,1980 at 8:35 a.m. an unknown male called the Unit.2 control room via the site intercom system and stated to a control room operator "I have just planted a bomb on the 80 foot turbine and-if you can't find it by 10 o' clock...too bad." The caller's voice was described as raspy and with a southern accent. Although there is no 80' turbine deck level at Brunswick, there are 80' levels at other plant locations.

The plant was evacuated and a thorough search was conducted with negative results. No known incidents occurred as a result of this threat and all personnel have returned to work areas.

On November 28,1980 at 1:48 p.m. a second bomb threat was received in the Unit 2 control room via the site intercom system. A male voice described as loud, course, southern accent, and sounding as though the individual were angry stated to the control room operator, "Did you find that bomb this morning? I rewired it and it will go off at 4:00 p.m. and you will never find it." The site has been evacuated and searches are being conducted. ,

The State of North Carolina and IAT have been notified.

The FBI and local law enforcement have been notified by the licensee and investigation is continuing.

A news release is not planned and news media interest is anticipated by the licensee.-

Brunswick Units 1 and 2 are both operating near full power.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this-occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 8:55 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on November 28. This information is current as of 3:30 p.m. on November 28.
