SUBJECT:
PERRY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT (UNITS 1 AND 2) RESPONSE TO NRC GENERIC LETTER 83-28, ITEM 2.1 (PART 1) REQUIREMENT Following the ATWS incidents which occurred at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 in February 1983, the NRC issued Generic Letter 83-28 (July 8,1983) to all licensees requiring that they respond to the gener;; issues raised in that letter based on the NRC staff's analysis of the Salem ATWS incidents.
Item 2.1 (Part 1) in Generic letter 83-28 required licensees to confirm that all plant components whose function is required to trip the plant are identified as safety-related in documents, procedures, and information handling systems used in the plant to control safety-related activities, including maintenance, work orders, and parts replacement.
Your letters dated April 6,1984 and August 28, 1985 responded to Generic letter 83-28. The staff has reviewed your response to 2.1 (Part 1) and finds the response, as is documented in the enclosed safety evaluation report, to be acceptable. The staff is continuing its review-of Item 2.1 (Part 2), which pertains to vender interfaces. The results of that review will be communicated to you at a later date.
In addition to Item 2.1 (Part 1), the Perry plant has been found to have acceptably responded to Generic letter 83-28 Items 1.2, 3.1.1, 3.1.2. 3.2.1, 3.2.2 and 4.5.1.
The staff's evaluations relative to these items tre documented in SER Supplement No.10, Section 7.2.2.3.
Still under myiew by the staff, in addition to Item 2.1 (Part 2), are your responses to 02neric letter 83-28 Items 2.2, 3.1.3, 3.2.3, 4.5.2 and 4.5.3.
