Keppler Regional Administrator, Region III Office of Inspection and Enforcement U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn Illinois 60137 RE: Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-441 Kaman High Voltage Power Supply Circuitry [RDC 145 (86)]

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This letter serves as an interim report pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e) concerning the potentially significant deficiency with High Voltage Power Supply (P/N 450447) in microprocessors (2D19J100 and 2D19J200) manufactured by Kaman Instrument Company for installation in Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) Unit 2.

This item was originally identified to Mr. W. Forney of your office oa March 26, 1986 by Mr. R. G. Solt of The Clevelar.d Electric Illuminating Co. (CEI) as being under evaluation per Deviation Analysis Report 262.

Description of Deficiency l l

The Kaman Post Accident Radiation Monitor Microprocessor contains two power supply circuit boards. Since each Plant Unit has two Microprocessors, a total of four high voltage power supply cards were purchased and stored in the Project Organization warehouse for installation in PNPP Unit 2 Control Complex Elevation 638'. The Unit 1 condition was identified in our 10CFR21 report dated April 3,1986 (PY-CEI/0IE-0186 L). The power supply voltage oscillation problem described in that letter also applies to the Unit 2 equipment.

l Corrective Action Nonconformance Report TAS-125 has been generated to track the nonconformance '

and to provide a means for resolution upon completion of the Project I Organization engineering investigation. Currently, Project Organization and l the vendor are working together to determine the cause of the nonconformance )

and the corrective action for these power supplies. We anticipate that the engineering evaluation of the cause and identification of the corrective action will be completed by May 14, 1986, at which time, we will submit our next report on this item. j Please call if there are any additional questions.
