Docket Nos. 50-275 OL and 50-323 OL

Dear Administrative Judges:

In the Licensing Board's order of June 27, 1986, the parties were urged to attempt to settle Sierra Club Contention I(A) and were directed to file a joint report to the Board on the progress of settlement negotiations by August 18, 1986. Although the parties have not been able to jointly submit the report requested by the Board, the purpose of this letter is to provide the NRC staff's report on progress thus far.

The Staff has contacted Dr. Ferguson to determine whether there was any information Dr. Ferguson needed from the NRC staff. Dr. Ferguson indicated that he did not need any data from the Staff regarding Sierra Club Conten-tion I(A) (see letter dated August 8, 1986, from H. J. McGurren , NRC to Dr. Ferguson).

The Staff is also aware that the Licensee has been providing Dr. Ferguson with requested information. It is our understanding that while some progress
