McGuire Nuclear Station - Unit 1 Dockat No. 50-369 Gentlemen:
On June 26,1986, at 1800, while performing core verification using an underwater video camera, several small cylindrical objects were observed lying on the upper core baffle. On June 27, at 0000, additional cylindrical objects were found in the vicinity of upender during subsequent inspections. On June 29, 1986 at 0330, the subject cylindrical objects were confirmed to be spent fuel pellets. Subse-quently, these fuel pellets were vacuumed from the core and upender. Unit I was in Mode 6, refueling, at the time of the discovery.
This event is reportable pursuant to CFR 50.73 (a)(2)(ii). The Licensee Event Report for this event will be submitted by August 28, 1986, pending completion of the appropriate investigation by Duke Power Company.
