GPU Nuclear letter to the NRC dated April 9,1996 (letter No. 6730-96-2091) described the augmented testing program implemented for scram solenoid pilot valves (SSPV) at OCNGS. This was a result of generic concerns identified in NRC Information Notice 96-07 regarding slow scram insertion times caused by the pilot valve Viton internals.
GPU Nuclear has installed qualified replacement Viton 515 AB diaphragms in the SSPVs at OCNGS.
The replacement diaphragms made from Viton 515 AB have demonstrated satisfactory performance during qualification testing and post-installation augmented surveillance testing, and are expected to correct the problem associated with increased control rod drive scram times caused by sticking diaphragms in the SSPVs. This qualification is described in General Electric Company Report GE NEDC-32365P-Addendum 4. Accordingly, the augmented testing of these valves at OCNGS has been discontinued. Control rod drive operability will continue to be demonstrated in accordance with existing OCNGS Technical SpecificaNon Section 3.2 requirements.
