RESPONSE TO NOVEMBER 24,1997, LETTER
Dear Mr. Schoeniger:
This letter responds to your November 24,1997, request for U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval to begin demolition of several wrils in the South Wing of your facility at 540 East 105th Street. NRC approves your request to remove walls in the South Wing of your facility, provided the safety precautions outlined la the November 24,1997, and December 3, 1997, letters from Sevenson Environmental Services (SES), and subsequent phone conversations with John Buckley, are taken. These precautions are:
- 1. Shorebank Enterprise Group willinform SES radiological control personnel of the demolition schedule, prior to commencement, so that SES can plan and conduct radiological surveys as necessary.
- 2. SES will periodically conduct radiological surveys of the walls being demolished to ensure that contamination is not exposed during wall removal.
- 3. SES will survey all sections of demolished walls which were previously inaccessible, during the site characterization survey and post remediation survey, before releasing the material offf.E
- 4. if contamination is found (leve.ls greater than 50 percent of the unrestricted release limit),
demolition work will be stopped and trained SES personnel will take appropriate radic!ogical action. Appropriate action may include resurvey and/or remediation, h\\,$r Mr. Colgiazier informed John Buckley, during a phone conversation on November 24,1997, that SES has completed its post remediation survey in the South Wing. He also noted that i
none of the walls planned for demolition were found to be contaminated during the site I
