Inspection 50-245/86-01; 50-336/86-01 (12/31/85 - 2/24/86)
This letter transmits the findings of the routine NRC inspection of the Millstone
Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 on December 31, 1985 through February 24, 1986.
Particular attention was directed to the Unit 1 Emergency Gas Turbine Generator
(EGTG).
No violations were identified during this inspection.
The inspection
findings have been discusssed with Mr. Romberg of your staff.
Although the EGTG has recently completed a series of successful tests, its perfor-
mance was poor between the November 1985 preventive mair.tenance outage and those
tests. While your corrective actions, as detailed in Report Item 2, appear to have
resolved the current problems with the Emergency Gas Turbine Generator, the root
cause of the problems that were experienced has not yet been determined.
I would
appreciate your providing our resident inspectors with your analysis of the root
cause of these failures.
Please let us know if you plan additional actions to im-
prove EGTG reliability.
