Gentlemen:
SUBJECT: REPORT NOS. 50-424/86-11 AND 50-425/86-06
Thank you for your response of May 23, 1986 to our Notices of Violation and
Deviation, issued on April 24, 1986, concerning activities conducted at your
Vogtle facility under NRC Construction Permit Nos. CPPR-108 and CPPR-109.
We
have evaluated your response and found it meets the requirements of 10 CFR 2.201
for violations 1 and 3.
We will examine the implementation of your corrective
actions for Violations 1 and 3 during future inspections.
With regard to Violation 2, we request that you provide a supplementary response
addressing the following questions:
(1) What will be your action to correct the undersize conditions identified
for the subject welds?
(2) When repairs were made to correct the undercut, slag and arc strikes
,
which you previously discovered, was weld material removed and should
there have been a weld size examination performed?
(3) Your response indicates that the only previous deficiencies identified
at the site on the vessel welds were identified in receipt inspection.
Is this correct?
Our review suggested that vessel weld deficiencies
had been discovered during other inspections.
We have performed a preliminary review of your denial of the Deviation. We still
have the matter under review and will inform you of our decision at a later date.
We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
