ROUTINE INSPECTION AND CONFIRMATORY SURVEY OF THE WELD SHOP OF THE FORMER CLEVITE CORPORATION FACILITY IN CLEVELAND, OHIO; REPORT 070-00133/98001(DNMS) l
Dear Mr. Cronmiller:
This refers to the special inspection conducted on January 1415,1998, at the facility formerly occupied by the Clevite Corporation located at 540 East 105th Street, Cleveland, Chlo. The analyses of wipe samples taken during the onsite inspection were completed on January 22, 1998. None of the wipe samples were found to be above the NRC release guidelines for unrestricted use, The preliminary results of the inspection were discussed with Mr. Kim Lickfield and Mr. Rory Grube of Sevenson Environmental Services Inc., and Mr, John Schoeniger, Facilities Manager for the Shorobank Enterprise Group at the conclusion of the inspection. A copy of our report of this inspection is enclosed for your information.
The purpose of the inspection was to confirm your remediation of the enclosed portion of the weld shop in accordance with NRC release criteria for unrestricted use.- We evaluated your final survey of the enclosed portion of the weld shop, conducted a confirmatory survey of that area and observed in process final status surveys of Room 16, the machine shop, Based on the results of this inspection, we have determined that the residual radioactive material from formerly licensed activities conducted by the Clevite Corporation has been remediated to levels less than the NRC's release guidelines for unrestricted use found in the NRC's, Guidelines for Decontamination of Facilities and Equipment Pdor to Release for Unrestncted Use or Termination ofIJcenses for Byproduct, Source, or Special Nuclear Material, dated August,1987. Therefore, the NRC no longer has any regulatory concem with regard to the enclosed portion of the weld shop. These findings were the basis for our letter of January 23,1998 in which the NRC released the weld shop room for unrestricted use. No further surveys of this area will be performed.
