November 26, 1997 Mr. Leon J. Olivier Vice President - Nuclear Boston Edison Company Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station 600 Rocky Hill Road Plymouth, Massachusetts 02360-5599

SUBJECT:

PLANT PERFORMANCE REVIEW (PPR) - PILGRIM On October 22,1997, the NRC staff completed the semlannual Plant Performance Review (PPR) of Pilgrim. The staff conducts these reviews for all operating nuclear power plants to develop an integreted understanding of safety performance. The results are used by NRC management to facilitate planning and allocation of inspection resources. The PPR for Pilgrim involved the participation of all technical divisions in evaluating inspection results and safety performance information for the period April 1,1997 to October 1,1997. PPRs provide NRC management with a current summary of licensee performance and serve as inputs to the NRC Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) anr! senior management meeting (SMM) reviews.

This letter advises you of our planned inspection effort resulting from the Pilgrim PPR review. It is provided to minimize the resource impact on your staff and to allow for scheduling conflicts and personnel availability to De resolved in advance of inepector arrival onsite. The enclosure details our inspection plan for the next 8 months. Reaident inspections are not listed due to their ongoing and continuous nature.

We willinform you of any changes to the inspection plan. If you have any questions, please contact me at (610) 337-5183.

Sincerely, Original Signed By:
