Subject:

Docket Nos. 50-361 and 50-562 Individual Plant Examination of External Events San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Units 2 and 3

Reference:

0 '.ober 16, 1997 letter from Mel Fields (NRC) to Dwight E.Nunn (SCE),

Subject:

Request for Additional Information on the San

~]-

Onofre Nutiear Generating Station, Units 2 and 3 Individual Plant Examination of External Events By letter dated October 16, 1997 (Reference) the Nut. lear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requested additional information regarding the San Onofre Units 2 and 3 Individual Plant Examination of External Events (IPEEE).

It was also requested that the response to the questions be provided within 60 days of the NRC's letter.

Southern California Edison (SCE) will provide by December 15, 1997, within the

^

timeframe requested in the NRC's letter, responses to Items 2, 3, and 4 under the Seismic Issues.

Response., to remaining items, Item i under Seismic Issues, Items 1 through 7 under Fire Issues, and Items I and 2 under High Winds, Floods and Other External Events, will be provided to the NRC by March 16, 1998. The delay in providing responses to the remaining items is due to the large level of effort to respond to the questions (estimated over 2000 man-hours) and SCE's Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) group's continuing support of other ongo':19 issues (e.g., maintenance rule baseline inspection, NRC Risk-Informed Technical Specification Pilot Program, Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) Risk-Informed Pilot Study, PRA assessment for the Upcoming Unit 2 mid-cycle outage, and recent NRC Region IV requests),
