FFB 0 91998 PAGE 2 OF 3 DEVICE TYPE: Calibration Source DESCRIPTION 1 The Model No. OCD-S-104 sealed source contains approximately 20 millicuries (740 MBq) of Cs-137 in a ceramic matrix doubly encapsuled in stainless steel (type 316L) capsules. The primary capsule nas a diameter of 0.170" (4.32 mm) and is 0.233" (5.92 mm) long. The complete source has a 0.250" (6.35 mm) diameter and has an overall length of 0.688" (17.48 mm). Closure of the primary and secondary capsules is by heliarc welding. A set of six Model OCD S-104 sources constitutes a Model No. CDV-782 source set.

LABELING:

A serial number and "Cs-137" are engraved on the source. Attached to the source is a warning tag containing the following:

"OCD-S-104, Office of Civil Defense; DO NOT HANDLE, Notify Civil Authorities if Found, 20 mci of "'Cs" , date of assay, and name of manufacturer. The words " DANGER, RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL" and the conventional radiation warning symbol are also included on the tag.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

Prototype sources had withstood sea-water immersion, temperature resistance, impact, abrasion, and acid immersion tests without failure. The tests consisted of the following:

Sea-water Immersion: Source immersed in synthetic sea water for 14 days at 60-65 C (140-149 *F).

Temperature: Source subjected to 1000 *C (1832 *F) temperature for 30 minutes and then immersed in 7 *C (44.6 F) water.

Tmnact. Source struck 20 times by 8 ounce (0.23 kg) hammer dropped from a 4 foot (1.22 m) height.

Abrasion: Source rubbed over sheet of 100 grit abrasive paper with 8 ounce (0.23 Pg) force.

Acid Immersion: Source immersed in 0.01 N hydrochloric acid for 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> at 60 C (140 F).

SUMMARY

The Model OCD-S-104 Calibration Source was originally approved for licensing purposes on July 1, 1971, by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). This source is no longer used or distributed by the Office of Civil Defense.

There is insufficient information on file for this source to perform a safety evaluation. Therefore, this certificate is being taken to inactive status without further review based on the original review and approval issued by the AEC. This action is necessary for agency administration.
