Dear Mr. Denton:
On June 24, 1985 we responded to the staff's request for additional information dated June 4,1985, concerning periodic maintenance of the Reactor Trip Breakers (Item 4.2.1 of Generic Letter 83-28).
The staff's position as stated in the June 4,1985 letter was that the peiodic maintenance program should include measurement and recording of breaker response time for the undervoltage trip on a refueling interval basis (or at 500 breaker operations, whichever comes first).
We regret that in the preparation of our response of June 24, 1985, which para-lleled that of the corresponding response for McGuire, we failed to note the differences between stations on this particular item. The frequency given in our response applies to McGuire's program. We do measure and record response times at Catawba, but on an every other month, staggered basis for each main breaker.
These measurements are also taken after the six month breaker maintenance rather than before and after.
Since the frequency of these measurements performed at Catawba greatly exceed that required by the staff in its position, the present program is considered adequate and no changes are required.
We have reexamined our submittal of June 24, 1985 for any other instances where l
