McGuire Nuclear Station - Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Gentlemen:

On May 7, 1986, during a design engineering review conducted at McGuire Nuclear Station for NRC IE Bulletin No. 85-03, Motor-operated Valve Common Mode Failures During Plant Transients Due to Irproper Switch Settings, valves INI-9,1NI-10, 2NI-9, 2NI-10, and 2NV-7 were determined to be inoperable. The NI valves are Centrifugal Charging Pump Discharge to the Reactor CooJant System valves and the NV valve in a Letdown Isolation valve outside the reactor building. This event is reportable pursuant to CFR 50.73 Section (a)(2)(vii)(D). Submittal of the Licensee Event Report for this incident was originally delayed until July 3,1986, per my letter dated June 4,1986. The Licensee Event Report will now be substitted by July 15, 1986, pending coupletion of the event investigation, which is currently in progress, by Duke Power Company.
