SUBJECT:
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY. WILMINGTON. N.C.
Dear Mr. Ousenbury:
This letter is;in response to our telephone conversation of No/ ember 12. 1997, i
During that conversation. you indicated that the State of North Carol.ina.
Division of Water Quality and Division of Radiation Protection 6re considering imposing monitoring and remediation requirements on the General diectric
-Company (GE) located in Wilmington, North Carolina, to mitigate groundwater contamination.
You indicated that fluoride and trichloroethylene have been identified in the groundwater at offsite locations and that the State has some concern that uranium, identified in groundwater at the GE facility, has the potential to spread offsite.
The contamination may be the result of GE activities at the site authorized under NRC; License SNM-1097. Therefore, the NRC has the regulatory authority to require GE to monitor and remediate the groundwater as necessary to protect human health and the environment.
However, the NRC staff does not have any objection to additional requirements imposed by the State of North Carolina.
The spread of groundwater contamination from the GE facility is currently under review by the NRC staff.
We would like to work with you to most efficiently resolve this matter.
Please contact me at (301) 415-8102, if you would like to discuss this further. Thank you again for keeping us informed on this issue.
Sincerely.
