McGuire Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-369 and 50-370 AT&T Round Cell Battery - Periodic Update By letter dated December 5, 1995, McGuire committed to periodically inform the NRC of the status of the dialog between McGuire and the vendor regarding battery capacity immediately following recharge. Please find attached the required update.

The 125-volt AT&T high specific gravity round cell battery banks have been replaced with conventional low specific gravity cell battery banks at McGuire.

Therefore, McGuire does not plan to provide further updates on this issue.

AT&T Round Cell Battery Capacity After Recharge Periodic Update per 12/05/95 Letter to NRC, Commitment #2 PIP 0-M95-2131, Corrective Action #13 In a letter dated 12/05/95, McGuire committed to periodically inform the NRC of the status of the dialog between McGuire and the vendor regrding recovered battery capacity immediately following i ;harging. The following is an update status of the dialog:

The issue of recovered capacity has been addressed by the A f&T Round Cell Nuclear Utility User's Council Charter - Expectation #1, sponsored by Arizona Public Service Company. Since the last update, the remaining concern is that of available battery capacity following an unplanned discharge on-line. To address this issue, testing was performed by Charter Power Systems, Inc. in Conshohocken, Pa., in accorf.ance with an approved test plan and direct supervision provided by the User's Counctl. The test objective was to determine the affect of various levels of" shallow" discharges on returned capacity aner recharge. The test scope was expanded to include low specific gravity cells and 3 aged cells from McGuire. Full details of the testing, along with test results, was presented at the May 15-16,1997 meeting of the User's Council. Test results indicate that both high and low specific gravity cells fail to recover full capacity after a partial discharge, followed by a subsequent recharge at float potential. In comparison, low specific gravity cells showed an average capacity loss of 6.4%, and high specific gravity cells loss an average of 17.9%. These test results are consistent with premature capacity loss (PCL) seen in previous high specific grevity perfomiance testing.
