I License Number: SNM 490 i Re Amendment Request Gentleman / Madam The University of Cincinnati requests to amend its license for the PuBe sources, license number SNM-490, 1) to update the equipment available for use, 2) to update the instrumentation which is available in the Nuclear Engineering department, 3) to modify license condition 15.

1) 9. Facilities and Equioment The Puse sources are kept in a watertight aluminum tube near the bottom of a 12 foot deep water filled well. The storage room is kept at negative air pressure.

The following remote handling equipment is available for use with the PuBe sources.

9 inch pincher type handling tool with a head specifically designed to manipulate the PuBe sources (Notes this section had two minor changes. First, the need for a glove box to be in the storage room is being eliminated. The glove box has never been used for this license and is not anticipated to be used.

However, ther is a need to use the glove box for other operations which will require >vement to another room. Second, the remote handling equipment ik ed is being updated to that currently in use.)

2) 10.4 Radiation Detection Instruments and Calibration The subcritical assembly is used primarily by Nuclear Engineering. Nuclear Enginearing has available the following radiation detection inatruments.

Tvoe Number Radiation Detected Sensitivity Ranae Scintillation 1 Alpha 0 - 2.4 x 105 cpm GM pancake 1 Alpha, Beta, Gamma 0 - 2.4 x 105 cpm RECEIVED Qo.Il[f,)(&, 1 gk t %$kd L em: wrg An affirmative action / equal oppotiunity institution SEP 2 5 is97 REGION III 30M3

, .k..,

GM 1 Beta, Gamma 0 50 mR/hr Ludlum-BF3 1 Neutron 0 - 10 R/hr

3) Modification of license condition 15 License condition 15 states "the licensee shall conduct a physical inventory every 6 months ... records of the inventories... shall include the ... manufacture's name and model numbers".

A recent audit of the license uncovered a deficiency with ,

this specific requirement. Specifically, no model number can be located for the sources. Therefore, it is requested the need for the model number be removed. All other requirements for documentation of physical inventory are available and will be included in the documentation.

The University of Cincinnati is a non-profit educational institution. Therefore, under 10 CFR 171.11(a) (4) this license is exempt from fees.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to call.
