Qualifications of Isolators in Gamma-Metrics Excore Neutron Detector Equipment
Dear Sir:
The following information is provided to resolve a question raised by the Staf f during a discussion on June 13, 1986, pertaining to above subject.
There are no non-Class IE outputs from the Gamma-Metrics excore neutron detectors which require the use of qualified isolators. Although References (b), (c), and (d) stated that the neutron detector computer inputs (IRTU) were from qualified isolators, this is not really a necessary requirement since the analysis and test provided in Reference (b) demonstrated that there is insufficient voltage and current available from a failure within an IRTU to cause a detrimental ef fect on field devices i.e., neutron detectors.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention:
Mr. Vincent S. Noonan Page 2 Therefore, there is no need to qualify the output devices from the neutron detectors as isolators.
Furthermore, the transmitter used as the output device from the neutron detector is not used as an isolator in any other safety related circuit.
Very truly you s, N/
