MT)iffrATifMS 1flTR TASK 6 Perform three combined-effects tests that cover three break sizes at different locations: (1) an equivalent 2" break at the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) bottom head with liquid break flow (the bottom drain line break test), (2) an equivalent 3" break at the RPV downcomer above the top of active fuel with initially liquid break flow followed by two-phase break flow (the Gravity-Driven Cooling System injection line break test), and (3) an equivalent 14" break at the RPV steam dome with steam break flow (the main steam line break test). All three tests wili begin at 150 psia when the break flow is initiated. The tests will be conducted for at least 8 to 16 hours1.851852e-4 days <br />0.00444 hours <br />2.645503e-5 weeks <br />6.088e-6 months <br /> to ensure that quasi-steady conditions in the RPV and containment og reached.

In addition, there should be one repeat test for each of the three tests to ensure the reprodue.ibility of the important phenomena and system behavior.

Since the purpose of this task is to provide low-pressure data for code mode l improvements, the contractor 1,hould identify models in the ex sting codes, such as RELAPS and TRAC-BWR, 8

and ensure that the tests will produce the data needed to assess and improve these models.

Prepare a comprehensive test data report that includes: (1) a desenption of the PUMA test facility, an instrumentation list indicating the status of each instrument during each test, data uncertainty for each operational instrument, and figures with dimensions showing the exact location of each instrument; (2) a description of each test and the initial test conditions; (3) the important phenomena and system behavior observed in each test; (4) code models for which improvements can be made using the data obtained for the task; (5) fqures, tables, or correlations to present the data tnat are needed for code model improvements; (6) conclusions and recommendations.

Task 6 should be initiated by January 1,1998, and be completed by May 31,1998.

Dates 11/20/97 4:57am subject: Request for the approval of purchase of 9GB hard drive for thePUMA computer (IBM RISC 6000)

Dr. Han, This is'a request for NRC approval of the purchase of 9GB hard drive for PUMA computer. We need to enhance current disc storage space to mecc the demands for the storage, data conversion and analyses of the PUMA test data. The following explaination gives justification for this nerd.

Storage requirement for data: Since the beginning of this year we have been conducting seperate effect and combined effect tests on PUMA facility. On separate effect tests, typically we have conducted 20 sets of runs for each tests. The single phase natural circulation and two-phase natural circulation tests have been completed. The data set for each run takes about 70 Mb space. Thus for one seprate effect test we require about 1.4Gb disc space. The integral test such as main steam line break requires total space of 1Gb for each test. The data are stored in xmgr format.

Current State: We have total of 3Gb space now with PUMA computer. Cne GD space is reserved for the system operation. Thus we have only 2Gb space for storage. We can not store two separate effect test data or two integral test data simultar. ecus because that needs more than 2Gb space. If we need to compare the two integral test data, currently we can not do it. We need to transfer the data to magnetic tape which takes 3-4 hours to complete the task each time we need to make space for new data set.

Thus we need more storage space on our PUMA computer as we are conducting more separate effect tests and integral tests. Fortunately the hard disc price recently have decreased substantially and t. hey have become more affordable. We have identified the hard disc with 9Gb at a price of $1011.

Purdue Engineering Computer Network (ECN) will help un purchase and install this disc. This hard disc will be sufficient for our current and future need of storage space on PUMA. We beleive the enhancement of disc storage space is necessary anc we would like to have your approval for securing the additional storage disc for the PUMA.

If you have any questions regarding this request please do not hesitate to >

contact me.
