Oyster Creek Nuclear Generrting Station Docket No. 50-219 30 Day Response to Generic 1.etter 97-04; " Assurance of Sufficient Net Positive Suction licad for Emergency Core Cooling and Containment lleat Removal Pumps" On October 7,1997, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the referenced generic letter regarding a safety significant issue which may have generic implications for degrading performance of the Emergency Core Cooling System and Containment Ileat Removal pumps.

The generic letter required, within 30 days, a written response indicating: a) whether or not the requested information will be subn itted; and b) whether or not the requested information will be submitted within the requested time period. By this letter, GPU Nuclear, Inc. is providing the required 30 day response.

GPU Nuclear, Inc. is participating in a newly established BWR Owner's Group (BWROG) effort which has the objective of reviewing current BWR industry net positive suction head (NPSil) calculational methodology and recommending a consistent approach for utility 90 day responses to the generic letter. It is expected that the information in the 90 day response will provide assurance to the Staff that NPSl{ issues are being adequately addressed. The BWROG established a dialog with the Staff prior to the issuance of the generic letter and plans to continue that interaction so that NPSil issues are properly addressed. GPU Nuclear, Inc.
