SUBJECT:

NRC RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORT 50 341/97015(DRS)

Dear Mr. Gipson:

On October 10,1997, the NRC completed an inspection at your Enrico Fermi, Unit 2 facility,

The enc'esed report presents the results of that inspection.

Areas examined during the inspection included the planning and implementation of radiation

protection measures to maintain the mid cycle outage radiation dose As Low As is Reasonably

Achievable, radiation worker practices, outage chemistry, and refuel floor activities, Within

these areas, the hspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures and

representative records, observations of activities, observations of equipment material condition,

and interviews with personnel.

Overall, your staff effectively controlled radiation dose and radiological conditions for the work

associated with the 97-02 Mid Cycle Outage Your staff conducted the work efficiently and

radiation protection support for outage activities was evident, in particular, initiatives by the

chemist? staff expedited the reactor cavity floodup and changes in the refuel floor activities

resulted in significant dose savings, Radworker performance was generally effective, but

instances of inappropriate radworker practice were identifieri, in addition, the materiel condition

of the reactor water cleanup system continued to challengo plant staff and our office will review

this issue during future inspections,

No violations of NRC requirements were identified,

in accordance with 10 CFR 2,790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its

enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR),
