Control of Heavy Loads:

NUREG-0612

Dear Sir:

In Reference (C), we tranPmitted to yOU information regarding Control of heavy loads.

As a result of your Staff's review, on May 29, 1986, the Staff requested a list of modifications completed on the Polar Gantry ccane after the initial Design Proof test.

Below are those modifications which have been made to the crane:

1) As a maintenance item, the rope was replaced on the main and auxiliary hoists. The rope was purchased to the original specification and proof tested for actual tensile strength.

This was considered a minor change by the manufacturer (Whiting Corp.).

It should be noted that since the new rope was added, the main hoist has been used to lift the reactor vessel head (i.e., 169 tons).

2) A small auxiliary lift device, attached to the Polar Gantry crane for use during construction, was removed except for the mounting pads. The affected portions of the crane and the pads have been analyzed, and no detrimental impacts on the crane's performance or loading carrying capability were identified.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention:

Mr. Vincent S. Noonan Page 2 As noted in the NUREG-0612 submittal (Reference (c)], the crane has been reinspected by Whiting Corp.

No changes or modifications other than maintenance (i.e., lubrication) were recommended.

An inspection report on the above is available.

In summary, the minor modifications to the crane have been evaluated and the crane has been inspected and found to be acceptable by the manu-facturer. The Initial Load test, performed for the ANSI B30.2 requirement of 525 tons, is still valid. Therefore, an additional Maximum Capacity Load (MCL) test of 210 tons is not necessary.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, eb
