The Honorable John Breaux United States Senate SEmF"r 001101997 Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Breaux:
I am responding to your letter dated September 17,1997, which enclosed a copy of a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from your constituent, Mr. J. T. Taylor, dated July 25,1997, Mr. Taylor's letter of that date and a subsequent letter dated August 20,1997, concerning the application of the Louisiana Energy Services to construct and operate the Claiborne Enrichment Center were acknowledged by my office on September 2.1997. A copy of our repiy to Mr. Taylor is enclosed.
The matter of Louisiana Energy Services' application to construct and operate a uranium enrichment plan in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, including the issue of environmentaljustice,is still the subject of an ongoing formal adjudication before the Agency. Therefore, I trust that you will understand why the Commission cannot respond, at this time, to the substance of your constituent's concems without raising questions of prejudgment.
A copy of your letter and this response will be placed in the LES hearing docket and served on the parties to the proceeding.
Sincerely,
/
John C.
