VISIT TO SATSOP (WPPSS 3 6,5) S'lTE NEAR'ABERDEE3, WASHINGTON f

On Monday, September.16, 1974, I accompanied Mr. P. O'Reilly, LPM and other members of the TR staf f on a visit to theThe SATSOP site, about 15 miles east of Aberdeen, Washington. purpose of my visit was to inspect the meteorological program at the site and to discuss items of concern in the staff's review of the plant with the applicant.

Upon arriving at the site Monday morning, the AEC staff initially met with the applicant and the applicant's consultants prior to beginning the tour and indicated those areas of the site that the staff wished to visit. I then accompanied Mr. C. Erickson of WPPSS and Mr. K. Wise of EBASCO on a visit to the onsite tower and mechanical weather station on Minot Peak. The 199-ft guyed, triangular tower onsite has a good exposure in an open field.

The nearest trees are some 10 to 15 meters high alders and firs about 150 to 200 meters from the tower. The instrumentation con-forms to the recommendations of Regulatory Guide 1.23 except for the lack of a humidity measuring instrument at a level representa-tive of conditions at the level of the cooling touer exit and appeared to be working properly. The recorders may be remotely scanned by telephone. The mechanical weather station on Minot Peak appeared to be in a neglected condition, being tilted out of the vertical and having loose guy wires. Mr. Erickson stated that a new concrete base for the nast would be installed soon and the station returned to an acceptable operating condition.

At the post site-tour meeting, the applicant indicated that the I staff's concerns, with regard to ceteorology, were understood and that the information required by the staff would be provided.
