PACILITY: WPPSS WCLEAR PADJECTS NO. 3 AE No. 5 SUMMART OF SEPTDGER 16,1974 VISIT 10 WPPSS WCLEAR PROJECTS NO. 3 AND NO. 5 SITE AND SUBSEQUENT MEETIEG WITH WASHINGTON PUBLIC POWER SUPPLY SYSTD4 On September 16, 1974, representatives of the Regulatory staff visited the site of the proposed WPPSS Nuclear Projects No. 3 and No. 5 near Satsop, Washington in order to ====f ne the site and to discuss questions regarding seismology, hydrology, meteorology, radiological assessment, and accident analysis. An orientation meeting was held at the WPPSS office in Montesano, Washington prior to the site visit. Using models of the site area and the proposed facilities, the applicant presented a (

desord1:-description of the site. Pollowing the orientation, the participants were separated into groups according to technical specialization (seismology, hydrology, meteorology, radiological assessment, and accident analysis) for tours of the site and vicinity. A summary of the seismoloPy tour follows. Enclosures 1 through 3 contain summaries of the tours taken by the other groups.

Participants in the seismology portion of the site visit (a list of participants is attached) met at the Woodward-Lendgren office at Satsop,

Washington to discuss the itinerary for the site tour and to examine detailed geologic maps of the region, photographs of the trenclus, and I a model of the tuff bed which the applicant has constructed with pegs.

The group then traveled to the site area via automobile.

i A continuous trench along the tuff bed, TBC-4, was examined. .Approxiustely ene foot of displacement was observed on the famics esposed in this trench.

l These faults dip 40' to 50*. The applicant has need the slickensides located in the exposed area to determine the offset along the faults.

l Most of the joints observed in this trench trend northeast.

l The site of the proposed reactor buildings,===eilisyy buildings, and turbine buildings for both units was aummined. The applicaat informed the staff that additional core borings will be taken from the proposed l

location of the VPPSS Muclear Projects No. 5 contairnment structure and reactor building. The applicant stated that 190 feet of earth would be removed from the ridge to obtain the proposed site configuration.

Issadnation of tbs trench WK-1 along the W kman Creek yoult w s fclieved by a' discussion of this fault. The applicant noted that a dip-alia. e offset of 700 feet is evident aloog this faulto There were ubcabsettable overlying older soils or other surface evidence that somld to used in '

dating this fault.

A similar situation was ebeerved at taaech U-7 along the Weikswood Fault. l Me surface evidence was observed that could be used to date the apparent offset of approximately 1500 fiset. ,

Enroute to the treaches along the Gibson Creek Fault, a portise of the Crescent Basalt outcrop was observed along the roadway. The trenches GC-1 and CC-3 along the Gibson Creek Fault were then examined. Fc11oving a visit to the Crescout basalt quarry, the participants traveled to the .

applicant's storage facilities at Satsop, Washington to azamine core borings. The core boring B-17, tenen from the site of the center of j the proposed WFPSS Nuclear Project No. 3 ' reactor building was examined.

Several segments within this core boring exhibit very little, if any, cohesiveness.

At the conclusion of the site visit, all participants met at the Oakeridge .

Country Club at Satsop to discuss questions regarding seismology, hydrology, meteorology, radiological assessment, and accident analysis. A list of attendees and an agenda are attached as Enclosures 6 and 7, respectively.
