Dear Govemor Nelson:
I am responding to your letters of August 19,1997, to Chairman Jackson and July 31,1997, to James Kennedy of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, requesting that Mr. Kennedy attend the Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLW) Summit to be held in Lincoln, NE, on August 28,1997. We appreciate your invitation to speak at this important conference. We regret that we are unable to attend, however, because of limited staff resources in our LLW program.
We support the goals of the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Amendments Act of 1985, and the States' responsibility to develop new disposal capacity. We wish you success in the upcoming summit and trust that you will obtain information you need for sound decisionmaking.
