White Sands Report Vivian, Bob, Steve Baggett and I reviewed the White Sands Army Base Gamma Range Facility report, dated August j
26,1998, and the two operating procedures that you had faxed to us. We found the engineering study in the report well-conducted and the findings to be technically solid. The modified procedures to reduce pressure and terminal velocity correspond to the findings of the study and, consequently, are acceptable.
In our view, two additional precautions may be taken. Specifically, the study found that the sources can safely be used without breakage for their useful life of 5 years or 18,000 cycles. We agree with this conclusion. But as an extra reassurance, we recommend:
- 1. to keep track of the cycles for each source in order not to exceed the recommended value;
- 2. to validate that the 18,000 cycle limit is correct not only on the basis of the engineering analysis in the report, but on the basis of real tests as well. l.e. an endurance test up to 18,000 cycles could be run with a dummy source. In such an experiment the facility need not be simulated, one needs only to assure that the dummy source reaches the actual terminal velocity. Validation with the medium size source would also suffice because the safety margin for the large source is higher than for the medium size.
