Thank you for your letter dated April 21. 1997, shipping container for Type B cuantities of molybdenum 9regardinhandiodine131.
This package is presently grancfathered under the provisions of 10 CFR Part,
- 71. The Department of Energy (00E) has requested that the package be re-designated as a Type B(U) package and has also requested revisions to the leak test procedures.
By way of background the Nuclear Regulatory Commission )reviously reviewed a 1990 application from Cintichem. Inc.
to re designate t1e Model Cl 20WC as a Type B(V) package, in connection with our review of.that application, we requested additional technical information concerning, among other things, the structural and containment performance of the )ackage design.
This request was )ending at the time 00E acquired these paccagings from Cintichem. Since nettler Cintichem nor 00E replied to our request for additional information, we notified DOE that we were terminating our review in 1992.
At-present, we have an unusually large backlog of transportation package review work.
To manage our backlog. we have been assigning review priority based on date of submittal.
In view of the urgency expressed in your letter, we will assign a higher priority to our review of the Cl 20WC package. We antici
-1997. pate that our t.11tial review of your request will be completed in May At that time, we will inform you of any additional information we may need. Our ability to meet the September 1. 1997. date you requested will depend on the extent of the additional information we need and the length of time-you need to respond to our request.
