SUBJECT:

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3 Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS) l

REFERENCE:

Correspondence dated March 19, 1986, Gerald E. Gears, NRC, to E. G. Bauer, Jr.,

PECo

Dear Mr. Muller:

This letter addresses the request in the referenced letter to submit, a schedule for the submittal of a safety analysis for the design of the new SPDS planned for Peach Bottom.

c l

The replacement plant process computer specification was l

issued for bids on March 7, 1986.

The SPDS feature is a partion of the new process computer to be installed.

Selection of a vendor is currently scheduled for August, 1986.

Identification of a schedule for developing the safety analysis will only be known after selecting a vendor.

For this reason, we propose a delay in responding to this request until l

October, 1986, at which time the schedule for the safety analysis submittal will be submitted.

In addition to the safety analysis, we will describe the human factors program, task analysis, design verification and validation program, and the algorithm for validating data, as requested in the Safety Evaluation enclosed with the referenced letter.

Mr. Daniel R. Muller May 21, 1986 Page 2 The NRC's Safety Evaluation also recommended that the containment isolation valve position status be incorporated into the SPDS planned for Peach Bottom.

In response to this request, we will include isolation valve position status for Groups I, II, and III (

Reference:

Peach Bottom Technical Specification Table 3.7.1).

Direct valve position indication will be.provided except for selected valves less than three inches in diameter which use indirect indication (control command signal).

This indirect indication has been previously justified in Attachment II, page 36 of the Regulatory Guide 1.97 submittal dated September 27, 1984 (S.

L. Daltroff, PECo, to D. G. Eisenhut, URC).

If you have any questions or require further information on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, b
