Docket No. 50-315 Docket No. 50-316 American Electric Power Service Corporation Indiana and Michigan Electric Company ATTN: Mr. John E. Dolan Vice Chairman Engineering and Construction 1 Riverside. Plaza Colunbus, OH 43216

. Gentl emen:

This~ refers'to the meeting between our respective staff held in our office in Glen Ellyn, Illinois on October 3, 1985 to discuss your program for

correcting the weaknesses in the D. C. Cook radiation protection program which were discussed with D. C. Cook personnel on September 6, 1985, at the conclusion of an NRC inspection.

In general, we find your proposed improvement program (enclosed) acceptable.

-Suggested improvements were discussed during October 29, 1985 telephone conversations between members of our staffs. 'It is our understanding, based on those telephone conversations, that you intend to complete nearly all the

-radiation protection technician incident response training and general employee radiation protection practical training before the upcoming Unit 1 outage, even.though your scheduled completion date for this training is July 1986.

We appreciate your staff's prompt action to address these issues and want to encourage you to continue this positive performance. We will monitor these

<afforts in our future inspections. To assure ourselves that the corrective

~

measures are effectively implemented and that newly identified weaknesses will be promptly addressed by your staff, we intend to implement augmented inspections of your Radiation Protection Program commencing with the start of the refueling outage to be conducted on D. C. Cook Unit 1 during the first part. of next year.
