SUBJECT:

USE OF ASME CODE CASE N-416 FOR THE WNP-2, DOCKET NO. 50-397, TAC N0. 58029 The Mechanical Engineering Branch has completed its review of the Washington Public Power Supply System request for authorization to use ASME Code Case' N-416 for application in the repair or replacement of Class 2 piping for the WNP-2 plant, as discussed in the licensee's letter G02-85-313, dated June 14, 1985.

Code Case N-416, " Alternate Rules for Hydrostatic 6 Testing of Repair or Replacement of Class 2 Piping Section XI, Division 1,", is an acceptable Code Case which is approved as written with no additional requirements other than those specified in the Code Case.

The Code Case is expected to be endorsed by the NRC in a future revision of Regulatory Guide 1.147, " Inservice Inspection Code Case Acceptability ASME Section XI Division 1."

Code Case N-416 may, therefore, be used at the WNP-2 plant in the repair or replacement of Class 2 piping within the limitations stated in the " Inquiry" and " Reply" section of the Code Case.

Use of the Code Case should be documented in a future Amendment to the FSAR.
