REGISTRATION PROGRAMS FOR X-RAY SYSTEMS i

Supp!ementary Information: In a letter dated July 2,1998 (SP 058), you were informed that the Commission oirected the staff, in part, in a April 13,1998 Staff Requirements Memorandum to implement a registration and follow-up program for certain generallicensees. The NRC requested information from Agreement States to determine which Agreement States 5ad implemented registration programs for general licensees. The NRC had follow-up discussions or on-site visits with those Agreement States who responded to the request. Subsequently, the staff has i'

determined that Agreement States may have computer based automated registration programs for x-ray machines that could also supply information that would be useful in developing the NRC's j

computer based automated registration program for the general licensees.

i The purpose of this letter is to determine which Agreement States have implemented computer based automated registration programs for x-ray machines involving at least 4,000 to 6,000 registrants and, of those that have, which Agreement States would be willing to work with the NRC in sharing lessons leamed and information developed as part of implementing this registration l

program. Thus, if you have a computer based automated registration programs for x-ray machines and are willing to discuss the applicability of concepts with NRC, you are asked to contact the individual named below within 30 days of receipt of this letter.

Once a listing of Agreement States responding to this request is obtained, NRC plans to discuss by telephone the scope and general applicability of Agreement State registration programs to NRC activities. The NRC and/or its contractor will then request to visit Agreement States that have programs of most applicability to NRC's planned activities to further discuss lessons leamed and information developed to support the Agreement State's registration program. It is expected that these visits will be 8 ss than one day at each Agreement State and will occur during the month of 9

January 1999.

This information request has been approved by OMB-3150-0029, expiration April 30, 2001. The estimated burden per response to comply with this voluntary col!ection request is 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
.
