Lester-S. 'Rubenstein, Assistant Director for Core and Plant Systems, DSI

SUBJECT:

WNP-2, DESIGN VERIFICATION PROGRAM In accordance with your request by memorandum from D. G. Eisenhut to R. J. Mattson dated October 31, 1983, the Power Systems Branch, DSI, has reviewed the final report of the design verification program of the WNP-2.

The program was established to reverify that WNP-2 was designed to meet the regulatory requirements committed to in the FSAR.

The scope of this program examined three complete reactor systems in detail.

Three reactor cystems were reviewed in depth: the high-pressure core spray system (HPCS);

the residual heat removal system (RHR); and the reactor feedwater system (RFW). The program involved the evaluation of the entire design process, including the translation of the FSAR requirements into design input and the adequacy of design output and interfaces. As part of the program, the installed plant structures were physically examined to ensure that they conformed to the design documents.

The Power Systems Branch has evaluated the results of the engineering design verification in the areas for which PSB has primary review responsibility. Through the design verification l

program, a broad sample of design elements were reviewed in. depth, providing i

a substantiative basis for judging the acequacy of the overall design and i

its implementation.

1 We conclude that the design verification program task force has. performed i

an in-depth design review on the electrical aspects of the three systems.

Also, we are satisfied'with its conclusion that the overall WNP-2 design process was conservative and produced a plant-design conforming to FSAR l

and regulatory requirements.
