j This letter is to respond to your staff's request that NRC staff provide an

interim status report on the review of certain RG 1.97 items which have been

, the subject of considerable discussion recently. The items are entitled as follows in your submittal of May 23, 1986 (ST-Pl.-AE-1664)

I (a) Pressurizer Peater Current l (b) Containment Atmosphere Temperature (c) Containment Sump Temperature

, The NRC staff is in the process of completing the review of all the RG 1.97 j items and expects to document the conclusions in the next supplement to the ,

! Safety Evaluation Report. On the above three items, the staff finds the South '

] Texas Project position acceptable for items (a) and (b). On item (c), the

staff is in the process of developing a regulatory position which may affect the acceptability or otherwise of the STP position. If the STP position is i a found unacceptable, the staff will discuss with you a mutually acceptable
schedule for implementing a resolution.
