-NRC BULLETIN NO. 88-04: POTENTIAL SAFETY-REIATED PUMP IASS Gentlemen:

On May 5, 1988, the NRC issued Bulletin 88-04,"Potential Safety-Related Pump Loss."

The bulletin requires licensees.co investigate potential design concerns involving safety-related pumps.

Specifically, licensees

have been requested to evaluate the potential for a pump to dead-head A

when it is operating in the minimum flow mode in parallel with another pump and evaluate the adequacy of the minimum flow capacity.

Carolina Power & Light Company is participating in a BWR Owners' Group program to respond to NRC Bulletin 88-04.

Upon completion of-the BWR Owners' Group evaluation. Carolina Power & Light Company will submit a response to NRC-Bulletin 88-04 for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant.

A report that (1) summarizes the problems identified and systems affected, (2) identifies neccesary short-te:1:m and long-term modifications, (3) provides a schedule for long-term resolution of the issues raised by the bulletin, and (4) provides any necessary justifications for continued operation will be submitted within 30 days of our receipt of the BWR Owners' Group evaluation.
