The NRC Region I SALP Board has reviewed and evaluated the performance of
activities at the. Yankee Nuclear Power Station for the period of
October 7,1986 through March 31, 1988. The results of this assessment are
documented i n the SALP Board Report provided at Enclosure 1. Briefly, the
assessment found the plant to ha,e been operated and supported in a manner that
reflected a strong management orientation toward safety. Although weaknesses
were identified during this assessment period, it appears that corrective
action programs are in place or planned to address deficiencies in these areas.
We will contact you soon to schedule a meeting to discuss the SALP evaluation.
At the SALP meeting, you should Le prepared to discuss our assessments and your
plans to improve performance in the radiological controls area. The meeting is
intended to be a candid dialogue wherein any comments you may have regarding
our report may be discussed. Additionally, you may provide written comments on
the SALP Board Report within 30 days after the meeting.
