July 22, 1997 Mr. Grahame Smith Head of Magnox Group & Sellafield Site British Nuclear Fuels plc Sellafield Seascale, Cumbria CA20 IPG U.K.

Dear Mr. Smith:

I wish to thank you and your associetes for a most interesting and informative visit to the Sellafield site on June 18, 1997. Thanks to your hospitality, we had the opportunity to observe the Sellafield Mixed 0xide Plant, Thermal 0xide Reprocessing Plant, and Vitrification Plant in the company of our colleagues from #er Majesty's Nuclear Installations Inspectorate. The visit allowed us to view and learn about recent technological advances by British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) in the areas of nuclear safety, mixed oxide fuel fabrication, and radioactive war.te management. This information will be helpful to the U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission in developing our regulatory program for nuclear safety.

I especially want to thank all of the BNFL staff and managers who supported the visit, including Mr. David Boyer, Mr. Bryen Martin, Mr. Tony Tilstone, Mr. Brian Burrows, Mr. Phil Bailey, Mr. Arthur Roberts, Mr. Jonathan Street, Mr. Peter Nuttall, Dr. Roger Howsley, Mr. Andrew Lorimer, and Ms. Julie Worswick.

BNF' should take pride in such accomplished and knowledgeable staff.

Sincerely, (Original signed by)
