I wish to thank you, Dr. Furness', and Dr. Pool for outstanding hospitality and support during my recent visit to the. United Kingdom (U.K.) on June ~16-19, 1997.
I was accompanied during the visit by Mrs. Elizabeth Ten Eyck and i-Mr. Michael Weber of my staff. Our visit included in depth discussions with u
staff and management from Her Hafesty's Nuclear Installations Ins)ectorate
. NII) about the regulatory framework-for nuclear safety in the'U.(. and

experiences in regulating safety of the Atomic. Weapons Establishment..The-presentations by your staff were very informative, helpful, and relevant to our ongoing development of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commiss. ion's regulatory-framework.for nuclear-safety.
In addition to our meetings.with your staff in Bootle, we also travelled with Dr.- Pool and his colleagues to visit the Sellafield nuclear insts11ation in Seascale on June 18.
We had the opportunity to observe the Sellafield Mixed 0xide Plant,' Thermal 0xide Reprocessing Plant, and Vitrification Plant in the company.of NII staff. The visit to Sellafield allowed us to learn about.
recent tt.chnological advances by British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) in the areas of j
nuclear safety, mixed oxide fuel fabrication._ and radioactive. waste management and to exchange ~ experiences with our regulatory counterparts in the U.K.
