REFERENCE:

Letter From E. E. Van Brunt, ANPP, to USNRC Document Control Desk Dated June 9,1988(161-01094)

Subject:

Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps - Justification for Continued Operation The staff has reviewed the licensee's Justification for Continued Operation concerning the recent Auxiliary Feedwater Pump degradation event, and agrees that continued operation is justified.

A meeting wsth licensee representatives on this subject was held on May 31, 1988, in Rockville, Md. At this meeting the licensee presented a failure analysis and corrective action plan similar to that specified in the JCO. The staff had no problems with the analysis or the corrective action plans. The staff recommended t;at corrective maintenance on the pumps be performed as soon as h

feasible within Technical Specification time limits, instead of deferring the maintenance until the next outage.

The licensee subsequently informed the staff that this would be their course of action when all replacement parts were received from the pump manufacturer.

Please notify the licensee of the results of the stbff rev kw.
