Duke Power Company McGuire Nuclear Station Diesel Generator 18 Special Report On October 30, 1988 at 1335, Diesel Generator (DG) 1B experienced an invalid test failure during start attempt #602. Eighteen month preventative maintenance i had just been completed and this start attempt was the first of the break-in runs e fallowing the maintenance. During the start attempt, the DG required 11.4 seconds  !

to reach 4160 volts. l Unit 1 was in Mode 5, Cold Shutdown, at the time of the invalid failure, f During the 18 month preventative maintenance, all fual linos and injectors are removed, cleaned, tested, and reinstalled. Prior to completing the preventative r maintenance,(PT/0/A/4350/21), the fuel system is filled and vented; however, fuel t hes not yet entered the injectors. The first start attempt following the 18 month  ;

PT usually requires a longer start time for this reason. All ott.er starts following the initial start per procedure MP/0/A/7400/65 DG Break-In Runs, f were successful strrts. DG 1B successfully completed the DG operability test and was declared cperable at 1130 on November 3, 1988. ,

Applicable procedures for DG testing will be reviewed, and revised if necessary, i to improve the probability of successful starts following DG injector maintenance.
