Partial examination is possible from both nozzle sides near the weld since the surfacen are parallel to each

() VEOP-2 RR-35 component or Relief Area Volumetric examination or pressure retaining welds in thin-walled (less than 0.5 inch wall thickness) piping and small-diameter (down to 2-inch diameter) piping. In the 1983 ASME Code through S'83 Addenda, these lines are exempt due to size or pressure and temperature. However, as a condition of licensing, Jeorgia Power company agreed to accomplish volumetric examinations on a minimum of a percent of the welds in the engineered-safety systems.

Requirement from which Relief ic Requested ASME Code Section XI, Article III - 4430 requires that the examination shall be performed using a sufficiently long  ;

examination beam path to provide coverage of the required examination volume in two beam-path directions. The examinations shall be performed from two sides of the weld, where practicable, or from one side cf the weld as a minimum. Article III -

4430 requires that the angle beam l lO examination for reflectors transverse to the weld shall be performed on the weld crown on a single scan path to examine the weld root by one-half V-path in two directions I

along the weld. Acticle III -

2430 requires that scanning l 1

shall be done at twice (+6 dB) the primary reference l level. l .

a

! Basis for Raliat

, The thin wall piping welds at VEGP have extremely wide weld crowns on both circumferential and longitudinal  !

j welds. Because of this, the scans parallel to the welds were omitted since the sound beam could not be made to hit the root area or the weld. The weld crowns could not be i ground flush because of minimum wall thicktiese violations i due to weld shrinkage at the root.

An axial ultrasonic scan, using a 1/4-inch diameter 60 degree shear wave transducer was completed on the required welds. This transducer was used with a modified wedge to reduce the front wedge to index point distance.

Due to material properties, scanning at twice the primary I reference level is not always possible. The welds have l

. Deen scanned at the highest practical scanning level. I i

1 Basis for Relief The steam generator primary side nozzles are integrally l cast as a part of the channel head. The steam generator l

and channel head areas are covered with cladding in the l "as-welded" conditions therefore, meanin2ful volumetric l examination cannot be performed from the "as-welded" l surface. Even with proper preparation of the inside surface l j for volumetric examination, an adequate examination of the l
