SUBJECT:
NRC ROUTINE CHEMISTRY AND RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION
l
REPORT 50-440/98022(DRS)
'
Dear Mr. Myers:
On November 6,1998, the NRC completed an inspection at your Perry Nuclear Power Plant.
,
The enclosed report presents the results of this inspection. No violations of NRC requirements
{
were identified.
l
- The inspection was an examination of activities conducted under your license as they relate to
)
radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations and with the
conditions of your license. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective
examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, and
observation of activities in progress.- Specifically, the inspection focused on the implementation
of the chemistry and meteorology programs and on personnel radiation dose control. During
this inspection, a previous inspection item, conceming the evaluation of radionuclide scaling
factors, was also reviewed.
We recognized the positive results o' f your personnel dose control program and your low
- personnel dose for 1998. In addition, your staff continued to be effective in minimizing the
- levels of corrosive impurities in the reactor coolant system and in monitoring reactor water
quality and fuel performance. The chemistry staff implemented sound laboratory quality control
practices, and chemistry technicians demonstrated effective analytical techniques. As a result
of chemistry assessment findings, your chemistry staff developed initiatives to improve the self
assessment program and to improve certain aspects of the chemistry program.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commissions regulations, a copy of this letter and its
//
enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
