Dear ftr. Cottle:

ACRS(10)

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. GRAND GULF NUC' LEAR STATION, UNIT 1 (TAC NO, 69868)

Ey letter dated October 27, 1988, System Energy Resources, Inc., requested a l

i review of its criticality analysis for the proposed storage of Cycle 4 fuel in the spent fuel storege racks of Grand Gulf Nuc1 car Station, Unit 1 (GGNS.1).

The NRC staff is reviewing this submittal and finds that the following i

additional information is needed to complete our review. Your letter dated November 21, 1988, regarding the effect of gaps in the Boraficx poison material on the margin to criticality, stated that analyses were made to determine the l

4 1

effect on k. effective ar.d provided qualitative results of the analyses.

i Provide quantitative results of the analyses showing the sensitivity of l

k-effective to gap dimension.

Designate the calculated k-effective for the I

existing and projected gaps in the Boraflex, based on gap blackness measure-(

ments in the GGNS-1 spent fuel racks. Justify the size of the gaps used in the calculation since blackness was measured for only about 10% of the irradiated storage rack cells and only 50 cells out of a total of 4348 cells

[

4 will be tested each refueling outage.

[

In order to support our review schedule, you are requested to respond to the above request by Noverter 30, 1988.

This request was discussed with your representatives by telephone on Noverber 22, 1988.
